Philadelphia-based composer Joel Ronning aka Ratanga Junction shared a touching new single from his upcoming album, Ellipses. Miles & Sartre carries a dreamlike impressionist overtone with a hauntology flair. Imagine if Basinski reworked Debussy. The fragile piano with the warm tape/vinyl hiss in the background creates hazy, nostalgic, hypnagogic melodic pictures. The track then takes on a more textural ambient-y feel with a glitchy percussion and deeper immersion.
Speaking about the inspiration for the composition, Ronning says, “I was reading a biography of Miles Davis and I found out that in the 60s he met the philosopher Jean Paul Sartre in Paris, but they couldn’t speak each others’ language so they communicated with smiles, nods, and gestures. When spoken words aren't present, what takes place instead? What was the mood, the atmosphere between the two of them? This piece is my answer to that question, my sonic representation of that scene.”
