NYC-based composer/trumpeter Dave Douglas's quintet released a hypnotic new composition from the upcoming album "Transcend." "Energy Fields" shines with its hard bop and prog folk blend and some ritualistic, theatrical mysticism. Over the rhythmic curves, the velvety, spiritual trumpet and sax outlines switch to the viscous, hazy-morning celloscapes and processional guitar epic. It feels like an imaginary session of Coltrane, Third Ear Band, and John McLaughlin, the music slowly carries you away into its fractal dreamland.
