Maya Ruth - Bell Jar

Grotesqualizer

New York City singer-songwriter Maya Ruth (also a guitar player of the all-girl outfit Homade) unveils her bleak and mesmeric debut single.

“Bell Jar,” possibly inspired by Sylvia Plath’s only novel, is cold indie rock that feels like the steadfast lead skies. Maya's lethargic and mild voice imparts the depressingly detached side of dream pop to the song, in the vein of Grouper or early Cocteau Twins. The pensive lyrical component highlights the themes of fatality and will, the feeling of existential pointlessness and destiny. The guitar work is compelling, these windy chords and twisting pedal sound sink you into the abyss of a lonely, shaky condition of a no-exit city inhabited by only mute shadows.
