“Playin’ It Cool” is a vibey, throwback alt-rocker with a high sun-ish feel. The guitars at maximum volume weave a lush sonic tapestry on the background layer. The song’s dynamic is enhanced by the thick, confident drumming, cutting the space. This is probably how Bardo Pond might sound like if they turned into a mid-tempo, ultimate grunge pop band. Paige Applin’s vocal performance has a dreamy yet reasonable approach, from which the playful lead guitar passages seem to grow. An incredibly effervescent and tuneful number.
