French bassist/vocalist/songwriter Mathilde Lejas aka Championne makes her solo debut with a dusky-silky number.
The ardent rhythmic confidence is smoothed out by Championne’s sensitive singing, as if hovering in the wind, behind which, nevertheless, anxiety seems to hide. Drafty and dreamy post-punk with an allergy to daylight is delivered in “Bilboquet.” The ringing, bleak guitar strings and wary synthesizer give off a sense of acute romantic fatality. The lyrics narrate about an experience imbued with the spirit of contradiction between pleasure and guilt.
