Susa Berivan, a singer-songwriter/musician/composer from Berlin, introduces a curious new song.
“Oh Boy” is resourceful art-pop steeped in the pre-bebop New Orleans jazz vibe, lyrically inspired by the play “The Cat On The Hot Tin Roof” and reflecting
“the rejection of the role of women portrayed there.” The track’s structure develops and relies on slow marching toms. Sometimes this alone is enough to draw attention to Berivan’s gorgeous vocal writing. There is a hypnotic depth and a bit of mystifying Middle Eastern nooks in her melodic vision, wrapped with the thick smoke of a surreal midnight lounge. Also, the song is atmospherically set off by the juicy, lingering trumpet, sax, and dramatic, old-fashioned cinema string accompaniment.
