In 2 months, North Carolina goth-punk cult Secret Shame will release the debut album “Dark Synthetics,” the disquieting contour of which is already showing up in the song “Dark.”
The opening bass chorus is like a strangely shaped key, and then - vaporous Oriental undertones, perturbed and unsettled mood, vague morbidly perfectionist phraseology, and a spellbinding voice. It sounds as if Toys Went Berserk were formed not in remote Australia, but on the dubious streets of Tangier, which were so vividly depicted by the very writer who shot his wife under questionable circumstances. With this song, it feels like Secret Shame sends some unidentified and odd gifts in quirky boxes, joggling the hive of a tense atmosphere.
