“The Motherboard” is the intriguing opener of Chicago multi-instrumentalist Will Mallard’s recent LP.
The track consists of a from-beyond-ish experimental jazz mutation that the artist also calls an
“unconventional meditation.” The distorted, digitized trumpet seems to resonate with the xenomorphic UFO nervous system. The keys broadcast some cryptic, psychotropic codes. The drumming has a winding groove, and the bass tone is pretty anxious. Mallard built up an exciting sonic accumulation drawing you in.
