Turn on the intensive recent number from Minneapolis, MN three-piece 58 Belvedere and sax player Nelson Devereaux.
“Carburetor” pushes you into the lair of resounding, head-shaking improvisation. The intro comes with clingy, loopy rhythm works containing well-oiled double bass, drums, congas. Gradually, it feels as if on the discreet hard/post bop basis, magic mushrooms sprout. By the 2:30 mark, the soft, technical passages by notable guitar explorer Dean Granros surrealistically curve and crumble. Then the mix frequencies change, and the saxophone boils the space, reminding what a pure avant-jazz squall is. The new album “Vista Cruiser” will be released this Friday.
