Nicole Marxen - Tether

Grotesqualizer

The cold and anxious hypnotism of sorrow is featured in the Texas musician’s debut single.

Nicole Marxen, a member of the dream pop/psych pop band Midnight Opera, becomes a darkwave visionary in her solo work. In the beginning, the track “Tether” is built on wary minimalism with a pulsating, monotonous bass, and haunting vocals living in pitch darkness, just like on the cover art. And at 1:17, the sound imprisons you in a dizzying observatory of hopeless alienation. This depressing art-pop is created from personal and painful moments that Marxen doesn’t avoid, but grabs and scrutinizes, delving into herself and coming up with this disturbing and beautiful music. The EP of the same name will be available on February 26, also check out this incredible video shot by Judd Myers, who was a set decorator on A Ghost Story (2017).
