Shayan - Ahange Gus

Melbourne septet Shayan, led by saxophonist and composer Omid Shayan, has released a strong jazz fusion record, “Sounds From Cross Street,” featuring 9 diverse, interesting tracks, including “Ahange Gus.”

Omid wrote this composition inspired by Iranian folk music and Iranian composers who sang songs for weddings. “Ahange Gus” opens up with nimble drums, pacing bass and chill guitar passages. Then the lush Middle Eastern brass polyphony pours in. Dynamically and smoothly music flows to a single point, from which the trombone and saxophone solos begin. From micro-quotes of jazz classics to the various passages of each instrument, towards the end, all of them laconically return to the folkloric kernel of a tempting main theme.
